In late August 2026, SpaceX formally introduced plans for Starbase, Louisiana — a second major launch facility sited along the Gulf of Mexico coast, which the company describes as the largest private spaceport in the world.
The announcement signals a deliberate shift in how SpaceX intends to scale its operations beyond the constraints of a single geographic location, and it raises immediate questions about timelines, regulatory approval, and the broader implications for the commercial launch industry.
Why Louisiana?
The Gulf Coast state offers a combination of attributes that align well with the logistical demands of operating a vehicle the size of Starship.
